Nathan Benderson Park announces indoor sports complex and boathouse project updates

Sarasota County is set to enhance its recreational offerings significantly with the ongoing development of the Nathan Benderson Park Boathouse and Indoor Sports Complex. During the Sarasota Board of County Commissioners meeting on July 9, 2025, Nicole Ristler, the Research Director of Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources, and Bruce Patnaud, Chief Operating Officer of the Nathan Benderson Park Conservancy, provided an update on the project, which aims to address the county's pressing need for indoor sports facilities.

The presentation highlighted the park's impressive growth over the past year, with over 100 events attracting thousands of visitors and participants. Patnaud noted that the park has become a hub for various activities, including rowing competitions and community events, with a dedicated volunteer base of over 1,000 individuals. The park's success has been recognized nationally, particularly with the recent Youth Nationals event, which drew around 5,000 athletes and 10,000 spectators.

The proposed indoor sports complex and boathouse project has been in the works since early 2022, driven by a feasibility study that identified a significant gap in indoor recreational space in Sarasota County. The county commissioners have allocated $20 million from the sixth penny of capital improvement funds to support this initiative. The project aims to enhance the park's existing facilities without disrupting its current operations, ensuring that it continues to host major events seamlessly.

Patnaud explained that the architectural design has evolved to optimize the use of space, allowing for better traffic flow and improved visitor experience. The new design will include areas for concessions, meeting spaces, and athlete accommodations, which are essential for managing the heat during events. The complex is expected to alleviate congestion by redirecting parking and traffic, making it easier for visitors to access the park.

As the project progresses, the county is committed to maintaining the park's reputation as a premier destination for both local and national events. The anticipated completion of the indoor sports complex and boathouse will not only provide much-needed facilities but also enhance the overall experience for athletes and spectators alike, positioning Sarasota County as a leader in recreational offerings.
