The Bangor City Council's Government Operations Committee meeting on August 4, 2025, highlighted significant updates on the Community Connector transit system and public restroom facilities, addressing ongoing challenges and future improvements.
The Community Connector update revealed progress in implementing new bus technology, although challenges persist. Transit officials noted that riders are becoming accustomed to the new bus stops, with ongoing feedback being addressed to enhance user experience. The next phase involves infrastructure improvements at the most heavily used stops, with over 300 stops across the system, primarily in Bangor. Grant funding is available to support these enhancements.
Staffing remains a critical issue, with the transit team working to bolster driver numbers. Currently, the system is close to being fully staffed with over 40 drivers, but not all are available for full shifts. Recent training efforts have resulted in eight new graduates from a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class, with recruitment efforts ongoing to restore Saturday service without risking future setbacks.
Additionally, the committee discussed the integration of the Community Connector with popular navigation apps like Google Maps and Apple Maps. Transit Administrator Laurie Linscott acknowledged the complexities involved in this process but confirmed that efforts are underway to facilitate trip planning through these platforms.
In a separate discussion, the committee received an update on public restroom facilities, which have been in place for a year. While some improvements have been noted, particularly near the library, challenges persist at specific locations. The city plans to enhance monitoring and cleaning schedules to address issues of vandalism and misuse. The contractor responsible for cleaning has agreed to increase service frequency, and additional signage will be installed to deter inappropriate behavior.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue monitoring both the transit system and public restroom facilities, with further updates expected in the coming months.
