UN Urges Immediate Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Civilian Casualties in Ukraine

In a stark call for peace, a senior United Nations official emphasized the urgent need for diplomacy to take precedence over fighting in Ukraine. During a recent Security Council meeting, the official highlighted the devastating impact of ongoing Russian attacks, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

In just one night, a large-scale missile and drone assault on Kyiv claimed the lives of at least 31 individuals, including five children, and injured over 1,150 others. This attack marked the highest number of child injuries in a single night since the onset of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The strikes damaged numerous civilian infrastructures, including schools and hospitals, leaving many residents trapped under rubble.

The official reported that since the beginning of the invasion, over 13,580 civilians, including 716 children, have been killed, with more than 34,000 injured. The relentless nature of these attacks has raised serious concerns about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, with aid organizations scrambling to provide emergency assistance to affected families.

In addition to the casualties in Ukraine, the official noted reports of civilian injuries in Russian regions due to drone strikes, underscoring the conflict's far-reaching consequences. The UN reiterated that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international law and must cease immediately.

The meeting also addressed the troubling treatment of prisoners of war, with reports of torture and ill-treatment emerging from interviews conducted by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The official urged both sides to adhere to international humanitarian law and continue prisoner exchanges.

As the Ukrainian people endure nearly three and a half years of conflict, the UN called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to pave the way for a just and lasting peace. The official stressed that diplomacy must escalate in the coming days and weeks, aiming for tangible results that would alleviate the suffering of those on the ground. The United Nations remains committed to supporting meaningful efforts toward achieving peace in the region.
