Proposed Laundry Facility Aims to Transform Portage's Laundry Experience

Portage residents can look forward to a new full-service laundry facility as the City Planning Commission discussed a proposed rezone during their recent meeting on March 3, 2025. The facility, which aims to transform the stigma often associated with laundromats, is set to be located on the west side of Willow Creek Road, just north of Bigby Coffee.

The proposal, presented by Ed McAlpine of McAlpine Consulting, seeks to change the zoning from office commercial to personal services. This shift is seen as a response to evolving market conditions, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has diminished the demand for traditional office spaces. McAlpine emphasized that the new laundry center would not only provide essential services but also enhance the community's character and convenience.

The facility is designed to offer a clean, efficient, and welcoming environment for customers, featuring both self-service and drop-off laundry options. The developers aim to create a space that encourages community interaction, with plans for outdoor areas equipped with games and seating, allowing patrons to relax while waiting for their laundry.

The site, measuring 1.45 acres, will include ample parking and a proposed detention pond, ensuring that it meets local zoning standards. The developers have engaged with city staff to ensure compliance and minimize the need for variances in their design.

As the Planning Commission considers the rezone request, the project is positioned to contribute positively to Portage's growth and community spirit. If approved, the proposal will move forward to the city council for final consideration, marking a significant step towards enhancing local services and fostering community engagement.
