Portage Fire Department requests inflatable rescue boat to enhance water rescue capabilities

The Portage Fire Department is seeking approval for an inflatable rescue boat to enhance its water rescue capabilities, as their main fire boat remains out of service due to ongoing repairs. During a recent Port Authority meeting, Todd Laux, a member of the Water Rescue Team, outlined the urgent need for the inflatable boat, which would serve multiple purposes while the primary vessel is unavailable.

Laux explained that the main fire boat, Marine 1, is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment in Virginia and is not expected to return until June. In the meantime, the department is limited to using a wave runner, which can only safely accommodate two personnel for rescue operations. The proposed inflatable boat would allow for greater flexibility and efficiency in responding to emergencies, particularly in areas that the larger fire boat cannot access, such as Lake Dombey and the marina.

The team has been pursuing the inflatable boat for several years and has received quotes from two suppliers. Laux emphasized that the inflatable boat would not only fill the gap left by the main fire boat but would also enhance the department's overall water rescue capabilities. He noted that the boat would be used for surface water rescues and could transport divers to locations that are currently difficult to reach.

Despite the pressing need, the department faces financial constraints, as their budget has been exhausted. Laux mentioned that they had reached out to FEMA for assistance but were unable to secure additional funding. The team is now looking to the Port Authority for support in acquiring the inflatable boat.

The discussion highlighted the critical role of the fire department in ensuring public safety during water-related incidents. With the boating season approaching, the urgency for a reliable rescue vessel is paramount. The Port Authority is expected to deliberate on the request, which could significantly enhance the fire department's operational readiness and response capabilities.
