Mayor Bonta Proclaims April National Donate Life Month in Portage

Portage City Council has officially proclaimed April 2025 as National Donate Life Month, emphasizing the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation. During the April 1 meeting, Mayor Austin Bonta highlighted the critical need for community support in raising awareness about the life-saving potential of donations. He noted that while 95% of Americans support organ donation, only 48% are registered donors, underscoring a significant gap that the proclamation aims to address.

The mayor's proclamation encourages residents to consider becoming donors, stating that one donor can save up to eight lives and help restore sight to two individuals through corneal transplants. This initiative aligns with the national effort to honor those who have given the gift of life and to inspire others to join in this vital cause.

In addition to the proclamation, the meeting featured a report on Youth and Government Day, where high school students shadowed city officials and participated in a mock city council meeting. This event provided students with a firsthand experience of local governance, fostering civic engagement among the youth.
