Smyth County's Planning Commission has taken a significant step towards enhancing local tourism and recreation by approving a special use permit for a small campground in Sugar Grove. During the Joint Public Hearing on July 25, 2025, the commission reviewed an application from Ryan and Allison Gruel to establish a campground at their property on Flatridge Road.

The proposed campground will feature two campsites available for year-round rental, catering to visitors seeking outdoor experiences. The Gruels plan to manage reservations through Hipcamp, a platform that also handles insurance and liability concerns. Notably, the campground will require tenants to pack in and pack out their trash, promoting environmental responsibility.

The commission's discussions highlighted the importance of adhering to zoning regulations, specifically those allowing campgrounds in agricultural rural districts. The Gruels provided assurances that they would limit rental durations to between four and fourteen days, preventing long-term stays that could disrupt the area's character.

The planning commission unanimously recommended the approval of the special use permit, which will now be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors for final consideration. This decision marks a positive development for Smyth County, as it aims to attract more visitors and enhance the local economy through increased recreational opportunities. The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the permit at their next meeting, paving the way for the campground's establishment.
