Santa Cruz City Planning officials are moving forward with a proposed housing project that aims to address community concerns while adhering to state housing laws. During a recent meeting, city planners discussed the project's evolution, highlighting significant changes made in response to feedback from local residents.
The project, which began with a pre-application submission on July 25, 2024, has been a topic of interest since a community meeting held on September 30, 2024, where approximately 65 attendees voiced their opinions. While some residents expressed support for the need for affordable housing units, others raised concerns about parking, traffic, and the overall design of the building.
In an effort to address these issues, the developer voluntarily revised the project design, moving away from a boxy, rigid appearance to a more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly layout. The updated design features recessed entries, improved landscaping, and a wider sidewalk, making it more inviting and better suited to the character of Santa Cruz.
To further alleviate neighborhood concerns, the developer has proposed several measures, including the installation of frosted windows to enhance privacy, the provision of 14 parking spaces, and a commitment to fund a neighborhood permit parking program for two years, pending neighborhood initiation. Additionally, the developer will offer a $1,000 landscape allowance to 12 affected neighbors for planting trees and shrubs to shield views.
These changes reflect the developer's commitment to engaging with the community and addressing their concerns, despite the limitations imposed by state housing regulations. As the project moves forward, it aims to balance the need for affordable housing with the desires of local residents, setting a precedent for future developments in Santa Cruz.
