San Francisco County is set to launch an amnesty program aimed at assisting property owners with building code violations. During a recent government meeting, President Mandelmann announced the initiative, which will waive planning code violations and associated fees for those who come forward within the next five years.
The ordinance, which has received unanimous support from both the Code Advisory Committee and the Building Inspection Commission, is designed to help property owners rectify issues identified in a quality control audit conducted by the Department of Building Inspection (DBI). This audit flagged 177 properties, with 136 receiving notices of violation and 41 still under investigation.
To participate in the amnesty program, property owners must apply for a certificate of existing conditions, pursue a streamlined building permit, and complete the necessary work to bring their properties into compliance. The program is expected to alleviate the financial burden of penalties and fees, estimated at around $925,000, which DBI can absorb without affecting its services.
This initiative not only aims to improve compliance with building codes but also encourages property owners to take proactive steps in addressing violations, ultimately enhancing the safety and integrity of San Francisco's housing stock. As the city moves forward with this program, it underscores a commitment to supporting property owners while ensuring adherence to essential building regulations.
