A significant zoning change is on the horizon for Birmingham as the City Council considers a proposal to rezone a property located at 2542 Queenstown Road from a single-family residential district to a light manufacturing district. This change, identified as case number ZAC2025-5, aims to facilitate the establishment of a contractor storage yard and an office and warehouse building on the nearly two-acre site.
The proposal, presented by zoning administrator Kim Spurwell, outlines plans for the construction of a facility that will house tools, equipment, and vehicles essential for contractor operations. The site is expected to operate Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, employing approximately 10 to 15 workers. The Liberty Highlands Neighborhood Association has already voiced its support, voting unanimously in favor of the rezoning request.
The property is strategically located within an area designated for light industrial use in the city’s long-range land use plan, aligning with broader development goals. The zoning change is also backed by the city's zoning advisory committee and the planning and zoning committee, both of which have recommended approval.
As the City Council deliberates on this proposal, the outcome could pave the way for new economic opportunities in the region, reflecting a shift towards accommodating light manufacturing within Birmingham's urban landscape.
