In a special meeting held on July 28, 2025, the Lombard Plan Commission discussed significant improvements planned for Glenbard East High School, aimed at enhancing safety, security, and learning environments for students. Jesslyn Kelly, a project manager and architect representing Glenbard School District 87, outlined the proposed additions and modifications that are set to transform the school’s infrastructure.
The project includes three key additions: a new main office, an expanded cafeteria, and a learning commons. The main office will be relocated to the ground floor, allowing for a more secure and efficient visitor check-in process, separating visitors from students and reducing security risks. Currently, visitors must navigate through student areas, which poses challenges for safety.
The cafeteria expansion is designed to address a recent shift in lunch scheduling that has strained the existing facilities. By enclosing the current patio space, the cafeteria will become a year-round usable area, accommodating the needs of students more effectively.
The learning commons will serve as a central hub for student services, providing easier access to guidance and emotional support resources. This addition will also streamline student entry, as it will be located near the primary student drop-off area, improving overall traffic flow and safety during peak times.
In addition to these structural changes, the meeting highlighted plans to improve site circulation. Parent drop-off will be relocated to Main Street, while bus traffic will continue to utilize Wilson Avenue. This adjustment aims to reduce congestion and enhance safety for all students arriving at the school.
These enhancements reflect the district's commitment to elevating educational experiences and ensuring a secure environment for students. The proposed changes are part of a broader initiative to align educational facilities with modern curricular needs, ultimately benefiting the entire Lombard community. As the project moves forward, residents can expect updates on the progress and further opportunities for community engagement.
