During the recent FY26 Budget Workshop held on July 19, 2025, the Milton City Council focused on critical needs within the gas department, highlighting the necessity for an additional work crew to manage the growing demands of the service.

City officials, led by Mister Cook, presented a compelling case for the addition of a three-man crew, emphasizing that despite a significant increase in gas mains and customers over the past decade, the staffing levels have remained unchanged since 2012. The gas department has expanded its infrastructure by 60 miles and now serves over 6,000 customers, up from 5,500. This growth has resulted in an increased workload, with the department conducting approximately 15,000 utility locates annually, which translates to around 50 locates per day.

Mister Cook explained that the current staffing levels are insufficient to meet both the operational demands and federal maintenance guidelines, which require regular inspections of the gas system. The proposed budget includes a 24% increase to accommodate the new crew and necessary equipment, which is expected to last for 10 to 15 years. This investment aims to enhance service efficiency and safety, addressing the backlog of maintenance and service requests.

Additionally, the council discussed plans for a new gas station to service the industrial park at Whiting Field, with an estimated budget of $80,000 allocated for this project. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve infrastructure and support economic development in the area.

The discussions during the workshop underscored the city's commitment to maintaining a reliable gas service while addressing the challenges posed by growth and regulatory requirements.
