Chimney Rock Road is at the center of a heated debate in Houston as residents push for its reclassification from a major thoroughfare to a minor collector. During a recent Planning Commission meeting, community members voiced their concerns over safety and traffic issues along the road, which stretches approximately 4,300 feet between San Felipe and Westheimer.

Mark Gardner, representing the Briarcroft Homeowners Association, presented the amendment, highlighting the dangers posed by high-speed traffic on the road. Residents reported vehicles frequently exceeding the 30 mph speed limit, with some reaching speeds of up to 77 mph. The lack of stop signs, traffic signals, and adequate sidewalks exacerbates the situation, making it perilous for pedestrians, especially children and the elderly.

Public comments reflected strong support for the downgrade, with 15 out of 19 submissions favoring the change. Residents expressed frustration over the road's designation as a major thoroughfare, arguing that it does not serve the predominantly residential area effectively. Concerns were raised about the absence of traffic calming measures, which are restricted on major thoroughfares, leaving the community vulnerable to speeding vehicles.

Speakers at the meeting shared personal experiences of navigating the dangerous conditions. One resident described the difficulty of crossing the road to access the only sidewalk, while another noted the impact on property values due to the unsafe environment. The president of the Briarcroft HOA emphasized the challenges faced by families trying to walk or bike in the area, calling for urgent action to improve safety.

The Planning Commission acknowledged the residents' concerns but noted the historical context of Chimney Rock's classification. While the commission has the authority to consider downgrading the road, they emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent classifications across major thoroughfares to ensure effective traffic management.
