Macomb Township Approves Budget for Two New Deputies and Vehicle Funding

The Macomb County Board of Commissioners convened on July 23, 2025, to discuss several key issues concerning public safety and community services. The meeting highlighted significant budget amendments and staffing needs for the Sheriff's Department, as well as updates on local infrastructure projects.

One of the primary discussions centered around a budget amendment for the Sheriff's Department, which included funding for two additional deputy positions in Macomb Township. The total cost for these positions, along with a vehicle, is projected at $128,634 for the remainder of the fiscal year, with a total contract value of $936,853 extending through December 2027. This initiative aims to enhance law enforcement services in the township, responding directly to a request from local officials.

Commander Ambrose addressed concerns regarding staffing shortages within the Sheriff's Department, noting that the department has been operating with a shortfall since 2020. Currently, the department is 16 deputies short but is actively hiring to fill these gaps. Ambrose assured the board that contracted communities would receive the necessary support, even if it requires utilizing overtime to cover shifts.

In addition to public safety discussions, the meeting included updates on infrastructure projects. The board received notices from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regarding stream bank armoring and erosion protection efforts, as well as updates on construction and lane closures in Macomb County.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to approve the proposed budget amendments and staffing changes, reflecting the board's commitment to enhancing public safety and community services in Macomb County. The next steps will involve the Sheriff's Department moving forward with the hiring process to ensure the new positions are filled by the planned start date of October 1, 2025.
