In a heartfelt tribute to the importance of green spaces, Milwaukee County Board Supervisor celebrated July as Parks and Recreation Month during a recent hybrid meeting. The supervisor, who authored the resolution designating this month, shared personal reflections from a recent camping trip at Camp Alastchester, organized by the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Wisconsin.

With a sense of joy and gratitude, the supervisor recounted their first experience at summer camp, where they connected with young women from local high schools. The camp experience, filled with activities like roasting s'mores with Girl Scout cookies, served as a reminder of the powerful role parks play in fostering leadership and community connections.

“Parks are launchpads for leadership,” the supervisor emphasized, highlighting how these natural spaces serve as classrooms without walls, nurturing future change-makers. They expressed appreciation for the park staff and community groups that bring these spaces to life, acknowledging their vital contributions to the community's health and happiness.

The supervisor also recognized Anna Simpson, the first Latina CEO of the Girl Scouts in Southeastern Wisconsin, praising her efforts to provide opportunities for young girls who may not have had similar experiences growing up.

As the meeting transitioned to the presentation led by Parks Chair Supervisor Wasserman, the message was clear: investing in parks and recreation is an investment in the community's future, encouraging everyone to support and celebrate these vital spaces.
