National Boating Safety Advisory Council Addresses Freshwater Electric Shock Risks

Concerns over electrical safety in freshwater marinas took center stage during the recent Port Authority meeting in Portage, Indiana. Officials discussed the importance of addressing potential hazards related to electric shock, particularly in freshwater environments where electricity can disperse differently than in saltwater.

One member highlighted their experience on the National Boating Safety Advisory Council, noting that freshwater poses unique dangers. They recalled a previous incident in Michigan City and suggested investing in dedicated testing devices to monitor electrical safety at the marina. "If this isn't horribly expensive, I would purchase such a device and have it on hand," they stated, emphasizing the need for proactive measures.

To further enhance safety, the member proposed maintaining a log of electrical tests conducted at the marina. "If I were the liability attorney chasing something like this, I would ask for that log book," they explained, underscoring the importance of documentation in protecting both the marina and its users.

In response, officials confirmed that safety signage is already in place, including clear warnings against swimming in the marina. "We put those up every year, so slip holders are well aware to stay out of the water," one member assured.

The discussions reflect a commitment to ensuring the safety of marina users and addressing potential risks head-on. As the Port Authority moves forward, the implementation of regular testing and enhanced safety measures will be crucial in safeguarding the community.
