Local Council Considers Ordinance for Police Enforcement of Park Rules

The Portage Park Board has taken significant steps to enhance safety and enforceability in local parks by establishing new rules that will empower the police department to enforce park regulations. During the meeting on July 15, 2025, board members discussed the need for clearer guidelines, particularly at Founders Park, where issues of vandalism and after-hours gatherings have been prevalent.

Ted Usalak from the Portage Police Department highlighted the challenges faced due to the lack of posted closing times, which has left law enforcement with limited options to address disturbances. The board agreed that setting a closing time at dusk would be a practical solution, allowing police to manage park usage effectively while considering seasonal variations in dusk times.

The proposed ordinance will grant the police the authority to enforce these new park rules, which the board will develop in collaboration with the police department. This initiative aims to create a safer environment for all park visitors and reduce incidents of vandalism.
