The Montgomery City Council held a regular meeting on July 22, 2025, where Mayor Benjamin presented a press release regarding the Heartwood Native Garden, a new initiative at Montgomery's Memory Park. This community-driven project is a collaboration between local volunteers from the Heartwood Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Grama, the Rotary Club of Lake Conroe Foundation, and the City of Montgomery.

The Heartwood Native Garden is situated behind the Charles B. Stewart West Branch Library and adjacent to Fernland Historical Park. The city has approved plans to enhance the park with native plants, which will include drainage improvements, planting native species, and installing educational signage. These native plants are vital for local pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and birds, which are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and contribute significantly to the economy.

Lisa Houston, president of the Heartwood Chapter, highlighted the importance of this garden in raising awareness about pollinator conservation, especially as many species face population declines. The project also marks the 20th anniversary of the Heartwood Chapter, which has 155 active members dedicated to environmental education and conservation efforts in Montgomery and Walker Counties.

Charlie Pareda, treasurer of the Rotary Club of Lake Conroe Foundation, emphasized the community's ongoing commitment to Memory Park, which has been a collaborative effort since its inception in 2005. The Rotary Club has played a crucial role in the park's development and maintenance, organizing volunteer workdays every third Saturday of the month.
