Syosset School Board Approves Emergency Electrical Repairs at Walt Whitman Elementary

The Syosset Board of Education took significant steps to ensure the safety and compliance of its schools during a special meeting held on July 22, 2025. The board approved two critical resolutions aimed at addressing urgent needs at Walt Whitman Elementary School and adapting to new state regulations regarding technology use in schools.

The first resolution authorized emergency electrical repairs and upgrades at Walt Whitman Elementary. Dr. Rogers explained that the school had experienced a power outage at the end of the previous school year, necessitating the relocation of students. Upon further inspection, serious issues with the underground transmission lines were discovered, requiring immediate replacement to ensure the school is ready for the upcoming academic year. The board opted for an expedited contracting process to facilitate these repairs, with the goal of completing the work before school starts in September. Should any unforeseen delays arise, a temporary power generator will be contracted to maintain operations.

The second resolution involved amendments to the district's acceptable use policy in response to a new state mandate banning the use of internet-enabled devices during school hours. This policy, which must be implemented by August 1, 2025, requires schools to restrict device usage from the start of the first class to the end of the last class, including passing periods and lunch. Dr. Rogers noted that the district would receive approximately $38,000 in state funding to assist with this transition, and a guidance document will be provided to help the community understand the new policy's application across different school levels.
