Adria McLeod, a passionate music teacher and parent, shared her experiences teaching a diverse student body at Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS). With over 85% of her students being English learners from 18 different countries, she highlighted the joy of introducing them to various musical traditions. However, McLeod raised alarms about the potential sharing of IPS resources with charter schools, which she argued often lack the same standards of transparency and accountability. She expressed concern that many parents are unaware their children are enrolled in charter schools, and that some teachers remain unlicensed for financial reasons. “We cannot move on and have the unity and collaboration that is being asked for until there is equal transparency,” she stated, calling for a reevaluation of how educational resources are allocated.

Following McLeod, Anh Nguyen, representing the IPS Parent Council, echoed the call for transparency and urged a moratorium on new charter schools. Nguyen emphasized the importance of community engagement in any decisions regarding school closures, advocating for the elected IPS school board to retain full authority over district-run schools. “Your recommendation to local and state leaders will shape the educational future of our children,” she warned, underscoring the critical nature of the council's decisions.

Dr. Brian Duarte, an educational leadership professor, brought a scholarly perspective to the discussion, cautioning against the unchecked expansion of charter schools. He pointed out that studies have shown charter schools often exacerbate inequality and segregation, urging the alliance to consider the voices of parents who choose traditional public schools. “The rhetoric around school choice is that parents know what's best for their children, so the voices of parents who choose IPS-operated schools need to be taken into account,” he remarked.

As the evening progressed, Mike Saradakis, a member of the Central Indiana Democratic Socialists of America, criticized the board's legitimacy, suggesting it serves the interests of wealthy donors rather than the community. He warned against the privatization of public education, which he argued could lead to the erosion of local democracy.

The meeting concluded with Alejandro Samaniego, a teacher and community organizer, reflecting on the historical context of educational inequities. He urged the alliance to invest in local neighborhoods rather than encouraging families to seek education elsewhere. “Let’s make radical decisions that actually invest in our communities rather than just telling people to escape Indianapolis,” he implored.
