Miami-Dade County's Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust (CITT) meeting on July 23, 2025, spotlighted significant advancements in transit-oriented development (TOD) plans for the region. Francisco Velas presented updates on three key projects: the South Corridor TOD, the North Corridor TOD, and the newly renamed Design District Extension.

The South Corridor TOD master plan is nearing completion, with 87% of the work finished and a total budget of $1.3 million funded through Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grants and local matching funds. Velas reported that community engagement has been robust, with three meetings and around 200 survey responses collected over three months. The project is expected to wrap up by fall 2025, with a full presentation to the CITT planned for September or October.

In contrast, the North Corridor TOD is just beginning its journey, having kicked off in May 2025 with a budget of $720,000, including $315,000 from PTP funds. This project will also focus on public engagement and is set to last 18 months. Velas noted an anticipated $500,000 congressional earmark that could enhance planning and outreach efforts along the corridor.

The Design District Extension, previously part of the Beach Corridor, has a budget of $1.125 million, with plans to start before the end of summer 2025. This project aims to capitalize on development opportunities in the area.

CITT members expressed interest in how these plans will address community needs, particularly regarding density and development strategies. Velas assured that community outreach will be integral to all projects, adapting techniques based on demographic differences across corridors.

As Miami-Dade County continues to evolve its transit infrastructure, these TOD plans are poised to shape the future of urban development, enhancing connectivity and community engagement throughout the region.
