Greenbelt City Council has officially recognized June as "Small Cities Month," a proclamation aimed at celebrating and supporting municipalities with populations under 50,000. During the recent council meeting, Councilmember Silke Pope, a member of the National League of Cities Small Cities Steering Committee, accepted the proclamation, highlighting the vital role small cities play in the fabric of American life.

The proclamation emphasizes that small cities, which make up the majority of municipalities in the United States, are essential for fostering community engagement and improving the quality of life for their residents. It calls for continued support from federal and state governments, as well as local organizations and businesses, to enhance public services and strengthen these communities, especially during challenging economic times.

Councilmember Pope noted that Greenbelt, with a population of approximately 25,000, qualifies as a small city under the National League of Cities' definition. She pointed out that around 80% of cities in the U.S. fall into this category, underscoring the significance of small cities in national governance and community development.

The council's decision to proclaim June as Small Cities Month aims to encourage collaboration among legislators, organizations, and residents to invest in small towns, ensuring their growth and sustainability. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the lives of all residents in Greenbelt and similar communities across the nation.
