Transfer Center Implements New Safety Measures and Technology for Waste Management

Safety concerns and operational improvements took center stage at the Hooksett Recycling and Transfer Advisory Board meeting on July 22, 2025. Board members discussed plans to enhance safety measures at the transfer station, particularly regarding pedestrian traffic near vehicle pathways. A new podium-style communication station will be installed outside to facilitate safer interactions between drivers and staff, especially during inclement weather.

The board highlighted the importance of making eye contact with drivers to prevent accidents, as there have been several close calls in the past. The new setup aims to reduce these risks by providing a designated area for staff to communicate with drivers without having to step into traffic.

In addition to safety upgrades, the board is implementing surveillance cameras to monitor the transfer station. These cameras will help ensure compliance with waste disposal regulations and prevent illegal dumping. Currently, the facility is dealing with the challenge of disposing of three compressed natural gas tanks that were improperly dropped off, which poses a significant safety hazard.

The meeting also touched on the financial aspects of waste management. The board reported that last year, the facility processed over 9 million pounds of material, generating approximately $114,000 in revenue, which helps offset operational costs. However, the rising costs of new equipment, such as a recently ordered trash truck priced at $440,000, were a point of concern. The board is exploring options to sell the old truck through government auction platforms, although the resale value of used trash trucks can be unpredictable.
