Kaufman County officials are considering a crucial funding request of $207,000 to support the operations of the local Children's Advocacy Center (CAC), which provides essential services to children and families affected by abuse. During the Commissioners Court Workshop on July 22, 2025, representatives from the CAC highlighted the pressing need for financial assistance to maintain their operations and meet statutory requirements outlined in the Texas Family Code.

The CAC operates as a public-private partnership, mandated to provide a multidisciplinary team model for child abuse investigations. This model ensures that law enforcement and child protective services work collaboratively to support victims. However, the center faces significant financial challenges, as state mandates often do not come with corresponding funding.

The funding request breaks down into several key operational costs, including $44,000 for professional services necessary for therapy and forensic interviews, as well as training for partner agencies involved in child abuse investigations. The CAC also outlined costs related to day-to-day operations, such as equipment, facilities, and specialized software for managing digital evidence.

The representatives emphasized the importance of these services, noting that contracting out for forensic interviews and expert testimony would significantly increase costs for the sheriff's office and district attorney's office. In 2024 alone, the CAC conducted 283 forensic interviews and provided 312 hours of expert testimony, underscoring the center's vital role in the community.

As the meeting concluded, officials were urged to consider the long-term implications of the funding request, which aims to ensure that the CAC can continue to provide critical support to vulnerable children and families in Kaufman County.
