Richardson is set to embrace cutting-edge technology in its stormwater management efforts, thanks to a new pilot program with JP Robotics. This initiative, discussed at the City Council meeting on July 21, 2025, aims to enhance the city’s infrastructure inspections through advanced robotics that offer high-definition CCTV and 3D scanning capabilities. The technology will not only identify potential failures in the city’s piping systems but also geo-reference them, allowing for more accurate GIS mapping.

City officials highlighted the financial benefits of participating in this pilot program, including discounted rates for inspections and the potential for ongoing savings as the technology scales. The pilot is expected to streamline inspection processes, making them faster and more cost-effective.

In addition to the robotics initiative, the city is moving forward with significant drainage projects. The ongoing work includes the completion of 10 out of 11 identified locations for stormwater repairs, with plans to address nine more in the upcoming fiscal year. Notably, the city is finalizing a $25 million flood prevention project, which includes underground detention facilities to manage stormwater effectively.

The meeting also addressed new regulatory requirements for stormwater management, mandating that the city retrofit 20% of its flood control devices to reduce pollutants. This will require a shift in resources, as the city will need to contract out inspection services to meet the new standard of inspecting 100% of these devices annually.

As Richardson prepares for these advancements, city leaders are optimistic about the potential improvements in stormwater management and infrastructure resilience. The anticipated outcomes from these initiatives will not only enhance public safety but also contribute to the city’s long-term sustainability goals.
