Lakeway City Council has taken a significant step forward in enhancing community recreational spaces with the approval of the Butler Rough Hollow Park plan during their meeting on July 21, 2025. The council unanimously voted to move forward with the park's development, which is set to include a variety of features aimed at promoting outdoor activities for residents of all ages.

The park's design, currently at 95% completion, will feature a pavilion, restroom facilities, a playground, an amphitheater, multi-sport fields, and a mountain bike skills park. Notably, the playground will incorporate inclusive elements, such as a roller slide designed for children with cochlear implants and various accessible play structures. The park will also include a ninja course and a unique bank shot basketball court, providing diverse recreational opportunities.

The estimated cost for the park's base bid is approximately $2.38 million, with additional features bringing the total to around $2.67 million. The council emphasized the importance of utilizing funds from the Highland Parkland fund, which has a balance of $525,000, to support the project. City officials are optimistic about securing additional grants to help cover costs, with a potential $50,000 grant expected soon.

Council members expressed their commitment to ensuring the park meets community needs, highlighting the importance of maintaining affordability while delivering quality amenities. The project is anticipated to break ground in early 2026, with an estimated completion time of nine months.

In addition to the park discussion, the council reviewed updates on other parks projects funded by a $22 million bond, including the Lakeway Swim Center and Live Oak Tennis Courts. The city manager noted that while these projects are in various stages of planning, the focus remains on delivering high-quality recreational spaces that cater to the diverse needs of Lakeway residents.
