Chatham County's 2024 Health Community Assessment unveiled critical insights into the region's health landscape, highlighting urgent priorities such as healthcare access, youth engagement, and substance use support. Presented by the Chatham County Public Health Department and the Chatham Health Alliance, the assessment serves as a vital tool for understanding community needs and guiding strategic planning.

The report, which comprises 17 chapters, reveals that health disparities persist in Chatham County, with significant gaps in mental health services, transportation, and job opportunities. Notably, one in twelve adults lacks a regular healthcare provider, and 12% of youth are classified as "opportunity youth," meaning they are neither in school nor employed. Substance use remains a pressing issue, with 67% of individuals seeking help reporting difficulties in accessing quality treatment.

The community identified three top priorities: improving healthcare access, enhancing activities for youth and young adults, and addressing substance use treatment and support. Specific concerns within these areas include the need for more healthcare options, affordable housing, and better water quality.

The assessment also highlighted alarming trends in housing costs, which rose nearly 10% from 2020 to 2022, and food insecurity affecting 12.6% of residents. Mental health challenges are evident, with 26.4% of adults reporting diagnoses of depression or anxiety, and 40.5% of high school students feeling persistently sad or hopeless.

In response to these findings, the Chatham Health Alliance is implementing a Community Strategic Plan focused on actionable strategies. Initiatives include developing mobile healthcare services, increasing youth engagement opportunities, and establishing a referral process between substance use treatment facilities and healthcare providers.

As the county moves forward, the assessment will be disseminated through various channels, including community presentations and social media, ensuring that residents are informed and engaged in addressing these critical health issues. The collaborative efforts of local agencies and community members are essential in driving meaningful change and improving health outcomes in Chatham County.
