Jackson Town Council is taking proactive steps to address water management and waste reduction in response to recent emergencies and ongoing environmental concerns. During a workshop on July 21, 2025, council members discussed the urgent need for a job management plan focused on water usage, particularly in light of recent drought conditions.

The sustainability plan, initially drafted without specific limitations on water use, has been revised to include a structured approach to managing water resources. The proposed plan draws inspiration from fire danger classifications used by the forest service, suggesting a tiered system that would guide residents on water usage based on current conditions. This system aims to communicate clear guidelines for irrigation and other water-related activities before emergencies arise.

In addition to water management, the council addressed waste reduction strategies, particularly concerning PFAS contamination and the overflow of trash in public areas. The introduction of bear-resistant trash cans has highlighted the need for better waste management practices. Council members emphasized the importance of requiring reusable foodware in local dining establishments to minimize waste. They noted that many trash issues stem from visitors, particularly those traveling in RVs, who may not have adequate disposal options.

The council is committed to finding sustainable solutions that reduce waste at its source rather than continually increasing the number of trash cans.
