The La Habra City Council meeting held on July 21, 2025, commenced with a heartfelt recognition of the city’s educational institutions and community organizations. The council honored three distinguished school districts that have significantly contributed to the education and development of students in La Habra.

The first district recognized was the Lowell Joint School District, established in 1906. Celebrating its 119-year legacy, the district has garnered numerous accolades, including the California Distinguished School Award and the National Schools to Watch Award. It ranks 11th out of 1,000 California school districts in reading and has received recognition for its music and art education. Accepting the award were Rhonda Overby, Assistant Superintendent, and Karen Shaw, Board Member.

Next, the La Habra City School District, founded in 1896, was honored for its commitment to preparing approximately 5,000 students across nine schools for future success. The district emphasizes collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking as part of its educational approach. Dr. Cheryl Tecker, Associate Superintendent, along with board members Minerva Gomez and Emily Pruitt, accepted the award.

The Fullerton Joint Union High School District, established in 1893, was the final district recognized. With a service area spanning 50 square miles and over 16,000 students, the district is noted for its academic rigor and community partnerships. Dr. Katie Wright from the administration accepted the award on behalf of the district.

Following the educational recognitions, the council acknowledged the United Methodist Church of La Habra, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. The church has played a vital role in the community, providing spiritual guidance and support for those in need. Pastor Kim Kathy and Jim Hill accepted the award, highlighting the church's long-standing commitment to service and community impact.

The meeting underscored the importance of education and community service in La Habra, recognizing the enduring contributions of these institutions to the city’s history and future.
