The project, titled "Rethinking the Bradford Pear," seeks to address the ecological and safety issues posed by these trees, which have been deemed illegal to sell or plant in Ohio since January 2023 due to their invasive nature and structural weaknesses.

Currently, Huber Heights has approximately 140 Bradford pear trees in public spaces. The proposed project will unfold in two phases: the first phase involves the safe removal of these trees by contractors, while the second phase will focus on planting native species. This second phase will offer two options for community involvement—either hiring contractors for the planting or inviting local residents to participate in a hands-on tree planting event. This approach not only aims to enhance the local ecosystem but also fosters community engagement and education.

The commission is exploring funding options through donations and grants to minimize costs, with a proposal to split expenses evenly between the Arts and Beautification Commission and the Parks and Recreation Board. The initiative is designed to promote environmental responsibility, public safety, and community pride, transforming the removal of invasive species into an opportunity for education and civic involvement.
