In the heart of Atherton, the Town Council convened on July 16, 2025, to discuss the growing popularity of pickleball at Holbrook Palmer Park. As the sun streamed through the windows of the city hall, council members gathered to review recommendations from the Park and Recreation Committee regarding the future of this increasingly favored sport.

Since its introduction in January, the pickleball program has flourished, with usage exceeding 200 hours a month across the park's two courts. Current hours allow play every morning until noon, and in the evenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as all day on Sundays. The demand for more pickleball opportunities has prompted discussions about expanding the facilities.

The Park and Recreation Committee proposed several options to enhance the program. One immediate recommendation is to convert the existing Court Number 1 into four pickleball courts, effectively doubling the available space for players. This would involve repainting the court lines while retaining the underlying tennis court structure. In the long term, the committee suggested replacing the underused handball court with two dedicated pickleball courts, contingent on securing funding.

While the committee's recommendations aim to accommodate the growing interest in pickleball, they also addressed the current limitations of the program. At present, there is no drop-in or open play available, and instructional use of the courts has not been permitted due to the limited number of facilities. The council discussed the possibility of allowing instruction, which could open the door for local instructors to offer lessons, provided they obtain a business license.
