Commissioner Lanter announced a significant new housing initiative during the Lexington Planning Commission Work Session on July 17, 2025, aimed at enhancing affordable living options for seniors in the community. The project, known as The Oaks and Woodland, will transform the historic Woodland Christian Church into a vibrant senior living space, providing 38 affordable housing units.

This adaptive reuse project will feature 10 units within the renovated church building and an additional 28 units in a new addition. The development not only addresses the urgent need for senior housing but also preserves the church's historic significance and allows it to continue serving the community. The church, which has seen a decline in membership, sought to repurpose its property in a way that aligns with its mission while contributing to the local housing landscape.

The project will include features designed for accessibility, with four units fully accessible and others equipped with essential amenities such as grab bars in bathrooms. Residents will also benefit from a community service facility that will host various activities, including meetings and social gatherings, fostering a sense of community among residents.

Located adjacent to Woodland Park, the development offers easy access to recreational activities, enhancing the quality of life for seniors. The park features new amenities, including pickleball courts and restroom facilities, making it an attractive environment for residents.
