Christy Lassen, chair of the Bright Minds Board, emphasized the foundation's mission to ensure every child in Howard County has the opportunity to succeed academically. Established in 2006, the foundation aims to supplement educational resources beyond what public funding can provide. This year, it focused on four key areas: removing barriers to learning, early childhood literacy, college access, and teacher support.

Notably, the foundation has been instrumental in providing emergency assistance to families facing homelessness, helping to reduce absenteeism and dropout rates. With support from the Howard County government, Bright Minds facilitated academic recovery programs for around 150 students, ensuring they remain on track for graduation. Additionally, over 5,000 Chromebooks were distributed to low-income families to bridge the digital divide.

In early childhood education, the foundation sponsored Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, delivering over 26,000 books to preschoolers, which has shown to enhance early literacy skills among participants. However, funding challenges may impact the program's future sustainability.

The foundation also awarded nearly $30,000 in competitive grants to teachers, impacting over 5,000 students across 30 schools. These grants support innovative teaching practices and mental health initiatives, reflecting the foundation's commitment to enhancing educational experiences.

Community engagement remains a priority, with successful fundraising events like the Bright Minds Golf Classic raising significant funds for educational programs. This year, the foundation achieved its highest fundraising levels despite broader economic challenges, underscoring the community's commitment to supporting local education.
