During a recent meeting of the Accomack Board of Supervisors, project manager Khaled Albi provided an update on the Onancock's Bayside Revitalization (OBR) project, which focuses on the removal of 22 unsafe structures that have long posed safety hazards to residents.

Albi, joined by Myra Taylor, president of OBR, detailed the project's progress over the past four months, highlighting the completion of five title searches and ongoing efforts to engage qualified contractors for the demolition work. The project, funded by a $150,000 grant from the county, is expected to span 18 months, with the goal of improving community safety and aesthetics.

However, the path to revitalization has not been without its challenges. Albi noted significant delays in title searches due to local companies being backlogged and understaffed. Additionally, locating the rightful heirs of the properties has proven difficult, complicating the process of obtaining necessary consents for demolition. The limited number of licensed demolition contractors in the area has also hindered progress, with only two contractors meeting the project's qualification criteria.

Despite these hurdles, Albi expressed optimism about the project's future. The team is committed to expediting title searches and securing property owner consent, while also continuing to identify qualified contractors. The urgency of obtaining demolition permits from the county was emphasized as a critical next step.
