The James Island Town Council convened on July 17, 2025, to address various community matters, including committee appointments, development issues, and zoning changes.

The meeting began with acknowledgments, including a thank you to community members who participated in the recent hurricane expo at Lowe's. Following this, the council moved to business development, where no new reports were presented.

The Trees Advisory Committee did not meet, but a nomination was made to appoint Bridget Lussier to the committee. The motion received a second and was unanimously approved by the council.

Next, the council discussed the upcoming meeting of the James Allen Intergovernmental Committee scheduled for July 30 at Town Hall, where traffic concerns related to the local middle school will be revisited.

The James Allen Arts Council is in the process of revitalization, with two new appointments: Trudy Mack and Christina Bailey Whitson. Both appointments were motioned, seconded, and approved without opposition.

The council then moved on to ordinances, with two items up for first reading. The first was Ordinance Number 2025-6, which proposes to rezone property located at 1444 Folly Road from the Residential Office (OR) zoning district to the Neighborhood Commercial (CN) zoning district. This change pertains to the swim school property. Planning Director Kristen Crane and the property owner were present to address any questions. A motion to approve the ordinance for discussion was made and seconded. During the discussion, council members expressed the importance of consulting the planning commission and suggested that the property owner consider applying for a variance rather than a blanket zoning change.

The meeting concluded without any proclamations or resolutions, and the council will continue to address these matters in future sessions.
