Austin's Audit and Finance Committee has made significant strides in enhancing public safety and community services through a series of ambitious building projects. During the meeting on July 16, 2025, officials announced the acquisition of a new public safety warehouse and plans for a modern public safety headquarters, both aimed at improving operational efficiency for the city's fire, EMS, and police departments.

The newly acquired public safety warehouse, which spans 230,000 square feet, is set to undergo a $32 million remodel, with completion expected next month. This facility will not only serve as a storage space for evidence and other critical items but will also adhere to Austin's green building standards, ensuring sustainability in its operations.

In addition, the committee discussed the upcoming public safety headquarters located at Barton Skyway and Mopac. This facility will accommodate approximately 2,000 employees and is projected to be completed by April 2026. The design budget for this project is set at $5 million, with construction anticipated to begin shortly thereafter. The headquarters will also incorporate environmentally friendly features, including solar power and reclaimed water systems, reflecting the city’s commitment to sustainability.

Another notable project is the relocation of the public health department to 2400 Grove Boulevard, previously known as Tokyo Electron. This facility will house various technology services and is expected to undergo programming this fall, with design work commencing in spring 2026. The initial design budget for this project is $1 million, and the remodel is slated for completion by early 2028.

The committee emphasized the importance of these projects not only in enhancing city services but also in stimulating local economic activity.
