In a vibrant meeting held at Austin City Hall, city officials unveiled ambitious plans for new facilities aimed at enhancing city services and community engagement. The discussions centered around two major projects: a new service center for Austin Resource Recovery and Fleet Mobility Services, and an Austin Water Control Center, both set to transform the operational landscape of the city.

The service center, located on Johnny Morris Road in District 1, is poised to become a hub for approximately 750 employees. With a budget of over $250 million, construction is set to begin this September, with a grand opening anticipated in the fall of 2027. This facility will not only house vehicle maintenance and office spaces but will also feature community areas, inviting local residents to engage with city operations. The design emphasizes sustainability, aiming for a four-star rating from Austin Energy Green Building, and includes innovative features such as reclaimed water systems and solar power capabilities.

City officials expressed pride in the project’s cost management, noting that initial estimates had projected costs exceeding $330 million. The final budget reflects a significant reduction while expanding the facility's size and capabilities. This new center will also facilitate the redevelopment of the existing fleet facility on Hargrave, allowing for environmental remediation of that site.

In addition to the service center, the Austin Water Control Center is set to replace leased facilities currently used by about 300 employees. Located on Huntland Drive in District 4, this $42 million project will also incorporate green building standards and is expected to begin construction shortly after design completion this fall. The center aims to foster partnerships with local schools, providing students with insights into careers in public service.

The meeting highlighted the city’s commitment to improving working conditions for employees, with officials noting the stark contrast between current facilities and the new developments.
