Traffic congestion around Camp Road Middle School is becoming a pressing issue, as highlighted in a recent meeting of the ReThink Folly Road Steering Committee. Michael Reidenbach, the executive director of security and emergency management for the Charleston County School District, addressed the challenges posed by the high volume of car riders, which has led to significant traffic backups on Camp Road and Folly Road during peak school hours.

Reidenbach noted that the school, which serves approximately 900 students, has a car stacking capacity that exceeds state Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines by 1,200 feet. Despite this, the school still experiences severe traffic delays, particularly at the beginning of the school year. Observations conducted in the past year revealed that traffic can back up for over 20 minutes during peak times, although adjustments made to the school’s opening hours have improved morning traffic flow.

Parents and committee members expressed frustration over the ongoing traffic issues, emphasizing the need for immediate solutions. Suggestions included staggering dismissal times for different grade levels and increasing personnel to manage the car line more effectively. However, Reidenbach explained that logistical challenges, such as siblings in different grades and the need for supervision, complicate the implementation of staggered release times.

The committee also discussed potential alternative solutions, such as utilizing nearby churches or community centers for pick-up locations to alleviate congestion. Reidenbach acknowledged the importance of safety and efficiency in managing the car line and committed to exploring all options, including potential capital improvements.

As the new school year approaches, the urgency for a resolution is clear. With increased traffic expected due to the closure of Central Park Road, the committee is hopeful that collaborative efforts will lead to effective strategies that enhance safety and reduce congestion around Camp Road Middle School.
