The City of Missoula is gearing up for significant transportation improvements, with multiple projects set to enhance safety and accessibility across the city. Key discussions at the recent City Club meeting highlighted the Broadway Tool intersection project, which aims to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety, expected to begin construction in 2026 or 2027.

Public Works Director Jeremy Keane emphasized the city's pressing transportation challenges, noting that Missoula anticipates a population increase of 56,000 over the next 25 years. This growth could lead to severe congestion if proactive measures are not taken. The city has identified $788 million in transportation projects, but realistically, only about a third of these will be funded and completed in the next quarter-century.

Keane pointed out that simply widening roads is not a sustainable solution, as it often leads to increased traffic and does not improve safety. Instead, the city is focusing on multimodal transportation options, including bike lanes, sidewalks, and public transit, to provide residents with alternatives to driving. This approach aims to preserve road capacity and extend the lifespan of existing infrastructure.

Among the notable projects discussed were the Russell Street reconstruction, which is projected to exceed $100 million, and the Downtown Sam initiative, which will revamp downtown infrastructure, including bike lanes and improved traffic signals. The city is also working on the South Avenue improvements, set for 2027, which will enhance bike facilities and pedestrian access.

As Missoula navigates its transportation future, the emphasis remains on creating a more connected and safer environment for all residents, regardless of their mode of transport. The upcoming projects reflect a commitment to addressing the city's growing needs while fostering community accessibility.
