In a decisive move to refine housing regulations, the Ulster County Legislature has adopted a new local law aimed at amending property tax exemptions for accessory dwelling units (ADUs). This resolution, passed on July 3, 2025, specifically removes short-term rentals (STRs) from eligibility for tax exemptions, addressing concerns raised about the original law.
Director DeWitt highlighted that this amendment is crucial for ensuring that tax benefits are not granted to ADUs used for STRs, which could undermine the intent of promoting affordable housing options. The legislature's swift approval reflects a commitment to maintaining the integrity of housing policies in the county.
In addition to housing regulations, the meeting also established a capital fund for the Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT) to facilitate the purchase of new buses. This initiative will utilize federal grant money to enhance public transportation services, although the new buses will be gas-powered due to current market limitations on electric options in the specified size class.
The meeting concluded with updates on infrastructure, including the operational status of the gate at Glen Street, which will remain non-operational until a traffic light is installed on Route 32, responding to city requests.
These developments signal a proactive approach by the Ulster County Legislature to address housing and transportation needs while ensuring that local laws align with community goals.
