Tompkins County legislators have taken a significant step towards enhancing air travel options for the community by approving a resolution to pledge a minimum revenue guarantee with United Airlines. This decision, made during the July 15, 2025, meeting, aims to support the addition of a third flight at the Ithaca Airport, which is expected to be operational by October.

The revenue guarantee, part of a Small Community Air Service Development (SCASD) grant, demonstrates strong community backing for United Airlines. Five local partners, including Ithaca Area Economic Development, the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce, Ithaca College, Cornell University, and the Strategic Tourism Planning Board, have collectively pledged $50,000 to ensure the airline's commitment. This funding is not an immediate expenditure but rather a balance sheet adjustment to secure the funds in case the revenue guarantee is called upon, which has not occurred in previous instances.

Legislators expressed confidence in the initiative, noting that none of the past revenue guarantees have been utilized, indicating a stable air service environment. In addition to the airline resolution, the meeting also addressed a budget adjustment for the Highway Department, increasing funding for the 2025 Consolidated Highway Improvement Program.
