Carlsbad City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing pedestrian safety with the unanimous approval of the Tyler Street sidewalk improvement project during their meeting on July 15, 2025. This initiative aims to address longstanding concerns regarding walkability and safety along Tyler Street, particularly in areas frequented by children and families.

Transportation Planning and Mobility Manager Nathan Schmidt presented the project, which has evolved from recommendations made in the Village and Barrio Master Plan adopted in 2018. The council's decision to accelerate the project in 2022 reflects ongoing community feedback about the need for safer routes to school and improved pedestrian access.

The approved plan focuses on enhancing the existing sidewalks on the east side of Tyler Street, which currently presents challenges for pedestrians, especially those using mobility devices. The project will include reconstructing driveways to create smoother transitions from sidewalks, thereby improving accessibility. Additionally, high-visibility crosswalks and curb extensions will be implemented to slow vehicle speeds and enhance safety for pedestrians.

The estimated cost of the scaled-back project is approximately $550,000, with sufficient funds available in the Capital Improvement Program budget. The next steps involve preparing detailed engineering designs and construction plans, with the council expected to revisit the project for bidding authorization in late 2026.
