Residents of Carlsbad are raising concerns about access to the North Beach Trail and environmental violations affecting local wildlife. During the recent City Council meeting, community member Martin Danner highlighted that the trail, part of Carlsbad's trail system, is currently inaccessible due to a permanently locked gate, despite a permit requiring it to be open from dawn to dusk.

Danner emphasized the importance of the trail for both residents and wildlife, particularly the endangered Ridgeway's Rail, which relies on the adjacent tidal marsh for nesting and foraging. He pointed out that the permit for Lehi Lands mandates the removal of invasive plants and the restoration of a 100-foot buffer zone with native vegetation, actions that are crucial for protecting local ecosystems.

The community is urging the City of Carlsbad to support the California Coastal Commission in restoring compliance at the site, as the current violations pose significant threats to vulnerable bird species and their habitats.
