Saratoga Park unveils Solomon Northrop sculpture to honor legacy of resilience and freedom

The Saratoga City Council meeting on July 15, 2025, highlighted significant community events, including the recent unveiling of the Solomon Northrop sculpture, "Hope Out of Darkness," at the Lincoln Baths in Saratoga Spa State Park. This event took place on July 10, 2025, marking the 218th anniversary of Northrop's birth.

The sculpture, created by nationally recognized artist Wesley Wolford, commemorates the life of Solomon Northrop, a free black man born in Minerva, New York. Northrop was kidnapped in 1841 and forced into slavery for 12 years in Louisiana. His story of resilience and ultimate liberation serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights. The sculpture is the first public artwork dedicated to Northrop and will eventually be relocated to Marksville, Louisiana, the site of his liberation.

The city of Saratoga Springs emphasized that honoring Northrop's legacy through this sculpture not only pays tribute to his memory but also provides an educational opportunity for current and future generations. The council encouraged all citizens and visitors to engage with this important cultural landmark.

Additionally, the meeting included acknowledgments for contributions to the upcoming 9/11 remembrance ceremony. The mayor's office expressed gratitude to local businesses and organizations for their support, including Belmonte and Sons for providing chairs, the Daughters of the American Revolution for silk and stands, and Just Brisbane for musical contributions.
