Mayor recognizes French American Heritage Month for July celebrations

The Bowie City Council meeting on July 14, 2025, focused on recognizing French American Heritage Month, celebrated throughout July. The council emphasized the importance of honoring the history, culture, and contributions of French Americans in the United States, a group that has significantly influenced the nation since its founding.

During the meeting, officials highlighted the deep roots of French culture in American history, noting that French explorers and settlers were among the first Europeans to inhabit large areas of North America. The Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which nearly doubled the size of the United States, was cited as a key event linked to French colonial history. The council pointed out that French is the fourth most spoken language in the country, including various Creole dialects.

The contributions of notable French Americans were also acknowledged, including artist John James Audubon, writer Marguerite Yourcenar, and political figure John Baptiste Pointe de Sable, the Haitian-born founder of Chicago. The council urged residents to celebrate the living presence of French heritage through music, food, and shared values such as liberty and fraternity.

To encourage community engagement, the council suggested several ways to honor French American Heritage Month. These included attending local French heritage festivals, exploring French American landmarks and museums, trying traditional French or Creole recipes, supporting local French-rooted businesses and artists, and learning basic French phrases.
