Soldotna Planning Commission reviews 80-foot fence project for river restoration

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Planning Commission convened on July 14, 2025, via Zoom to discuss various agenda items, including a significant project concerning the restoration of a natural area along the river.

The meeting began with a report on a proposed wooden fencing project aimed at protecting recently restored land. The project involves installing 80 linear feet of fencing to guide foot traffic away from sensitive restoration areas. The fence will consist of 4 by 4 posts and treated lumber cross beams, positioned parallel to the river. This initiative is intended to preserve the integrity of the restoration efforts by directing visitors away from vulnerable brush layers.

Public notice regarding the project was sent to eight property owners within a 300-foot radius of the site, but no comments were received. The project is also set to be reviewed at the City of Soldotna Planning Commission meeting on August 6, 2025. The staff report concluded that the proposed project meets the five general standards outlined in the Kenai Peninsula Borough regulations and recommended that the planning commission grant a conditional use permit, subject to the conditions specified in resolution 2025-11.

Miguel, the Assistant Director of the City of Sedona Parks and Recreation Department, attended the meeting to represent the project. He confirmed that his department would oversee the installation and maintenance of the fence and was present to address any questions from the commission.

The meeting proceeded with an opportunity for the commission members to ask questions of the applicant, ensuring that all aspects of the project were thoroughly considered before moving forward.
