Excavation team documents infant burial with advanced imaging techniques

During a recent public information meeting, the City Council of Indianapolis unveiled significant findings from the White River Innovation District excavation, particularly focusing on the remarkable preservation of an infant's remains discovered in a well-crafted coffin. The meeting, held on July 14, 2025, highlighted the use of advanced excavation techniques, including photogrammetry and 3D scanning, to document burial sites with unprecedented detail.

Excavators showcased a two-piece coffin lid featuring a viewing window, a historical element that allowed families to see their loved ones before the widespread adoption of embalming. This innovative design extended traditional mortuary customs, enabling longer viewings and wakes. The infant remains, designated as individual 159, were found in an exceptionally preserved state, with burial clothes and decorative elements still intact.
