DeSoto recommends $271K for housing and infrastructure improvements based on community survey

DeSoto City Council has outlined a comprehensive plan to address community needs over the next five years, following a recent special meeting on July 14, 2025. The council reviewed the results of a community needs survey, which garnered 191 responses from residents, highlighting key priorities for the allocation of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.

The survey identified infrastructure improvements, particularly for streets and sidewalks, as the top priority among residents. Other significant needs included affordable housing, especially for seniors and disabled individuals, and enhanced public services such as transportation assistance and emergency support for low to moderate-income households.

Based on these findings, city staff recommended three overarching priorities for the action plan: creating suitable living environments, providing decent and safe affordable housing, and delivering essential public services. The city aims to improve infrastructure, continue home repair programs, and support the development of affordable housing.

For the fiscal year 2025, DeSoto has been allocated $271,460 in CDBG funds, which will support various initiatives. Key budget recommendations include $90,000 for improvements to the DeSoto Senior Center, which is part of a larger renovation project estimated at $345,000. Additionally, $21,460 is earmarked for the successful transportation assistance program, which has recently transitioned to a new vendor, allowing for increased service capacity.

The council also allocated $50,000 for program administration to ensure compliance with HUD regulations and effective management of the CDBG program. The meeting underscored the importance of community engagement, as the response rate of 0.33% from the survey was noted as relatively low, prompting discussions on how to enhance future participation.

As DeSoto moves forward with these initiatives, the city aims to address the pressing needs of its residents, ensuring a more supportive and accessible community for all.
