Fire Chief outlines stop gap measures to improve response times in the city

The DeSoto City Council held a special meeting on July 14, 2025, focusing on public safety and fire department operations. A significant discussion centered on the challenges faced by the fire department in response times and the implementation of interim solutions until additional fire stations can be established.

Fire Chief emphasized the urgency of improving response times, noting that the current goal of four minutes is difficult to achieve with existing resources. As a result, the department is proposing a "stop gap" solution that includes the use of double company houses, where multiple fire apparatus will be dispatched from the same station. This strategy aims to enhance the department's capacity to respond to the increasing number of emergency calls.

The council also discussed the adoption of a revised response time goal of five minutes and thirty seconds, which is seen as more realistic given the current limitations. Chief highlighted that this adjustment would help the department meet its targets more effectively.

In addition to operational changes, the fire department is actively pursuing grants to support its needs. A notable effort includes a request for $22 million aimed at designing and constructing a comprehensive public safety complex, which would encompass emergency management facilities and potentially relocate the 911 center. This project is expected to take several years to materialize.

The council expressed support for the chief's initiatives and acknowledged the importance of securing funding and resources to enhance public safety in DeSoto. As the city continues to explore various avenues for improvement, the focus remains on ensuring timely and effective emergency response for the community.
