Parent demands Rockwall ISD action on student safety after heat-related incidents

Rockwall ISD is taking significant steps to enhance student safety in athletics following alarming incidents of heat-related illnesses among student athletes. During a recent Board of Trustees meeting on July 14, 2025, a concerned parent raised critical issues regarding the district's preparedness and response to such incidents, highlighting a troubling case of heat stroke that occurred in January 2024.

The parent, a former football player, expressed deep concern over the lack of transparency and communication from the district regarding safety protocols. He emphasized the need for better education for coaches and the implementation of trained strength and conditioning specialists at each high school. The parent urged the board to reflect on their current practices and ensure that measures are in place to prevent future occurrences of heat-related illnesses.

In response to these concerns, the board discussed the importance of oversight committees, similar to the existing concussion oversight committee, to monitor and address issues related to heat-related injuries. The parent offered his expertise in health education to assist the district in improving its protocols.

In addition to addressing safety concerns, the board also considered Policy Update 125 from the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). This update includes changes to the roles of board officers, specifically the removal of a requirement for the board to assign a district employee for clerical assistance.
